The Comeback

Another one with Palmer Williams III. He was helping on the visual side, knew the set needed real audio support, and tapped me so sound wouldn’t turn into a last-minute scramble. The project was for a skincare brand making a comeback and the energy from jump felt intentional. Calm. Focused. Like everybody actually cared. I came in early, mapped everything out, and let the prep do the heavy lifting so the day could breathe. On set, it was smooth — minimal chaos, clean communication, and a lot of trust. All other women on the set too, which shifted the vibe in a good way. It didn’t feel rushed or sloppy; it felt considered.

The Situation & The Goal

  • Context:
Brought onto a commercial-style social campaign for EGOH, a skincare brand reactivating its presence after a period of inactivity. The campaign, titled “The Comeback,” consisted of a three-part narrative social video series intended to relaunch the brand.

  • Problem / Opportunity:
The production required professional, reliable production audio to support a visually driven campaign. Rather than relying on a scrappy or self-handled sound setup, the team needed a dedicated production sound mixer to ensure clean dialogue capture across multiple scenes, talent configurations, and locations.

  • Desired Outcome:

    • Capture broadcast-quality dialogue and on-set audio for a narrative-driven social campaign

    • Ensure smooth on-set operations by proactively coordinating audio needs with other departments

    • Deliver sound assets that would support clean, efficient post-production and final edits

Process & Key Actions

  • Collaborated with creative leadership (Creative Directors Sededra Monae and Jodeci) and the visual team to align audio strategy with the campaign’s narrative and aesthetic goals.

  • Implemented a structured, repeatable pre-production audio workflow, creating three core documents:

    • A detailed technical sound coverage plan, breaking down each shot by microphone type, number of speakers, location acoustics, risk factors, and potential ADR flags

    • A comprehensive gear list, derived directly from the sound coverage plan to ensure optimal capture for each scene

    • A production-facing sound document, translating audio-specific requirements into clear, actionable notes for departments such as DP, gaffer, wardrobe, and makeup

  • Engineered a flexible audio setup to support scenes with up to four speaking actors, dynamically adjusting microphone configurations between scenes (lavaliers vs. boom) to maintain quality and efficiency.

  • Sourced and managed a full professional audio package through a trusted rental house relationship, including:

    • MixPre-10 field recorder

    • Four Sennheiser G4 lavaliers (with upgraded flat mics)

    • Rode NTG-2 shotgun microphone with blimp and boom setup

    • Tactical mixer vest for mobile operation

    • Boom pole and C-stand mounting solutions

  • Executed on-set production sound mixing and location recording, ensuring clean dialogue capture while maintaining minimal disruption to the visual workflow.

Results

  • Delivered high-quality, production-ready audio that supported smooth post-production and strong final edits for a multi-part social campaign.

  • Contributed to a streamlined set experience by proactively addressing audio needs, reducing friction between departments.

  • Supported the successful release of campaign content, with final posts and edits receiving positive internal and external reception.

  • Strengthened professional network by building new industry relationships, particularly with creative leaders and an all-female production team.

Personal Takeaways & Skills Gained

  • Reinforced a repeatable, scalable pre-production audio planning system adaptable to commercial and narrative projects.

  • Demonstrated leadership as a dedicated production sound mixer, elevating audio quality beyond ad-hoc or self-managed solutions.

  • Strengthened cross-department communication skills by translating technical audio requirements into production-friendly language.

  • Deepened experience with multi-talent dialogue capture, dynamic mic strategies, and mobile on-set sound workflows.

  • Expanded industry relationships and visibility within commercial and brand-driven production environments.
